in[SALT LAKE CITY, UT FEBRUARY 24, 2026] \u2014 <\/span>Pioneer Theatre Company<\/b> (PTC), Utah\u2019s premier professional theatre company in residence at the University of Utah, presents the Utah professional premiere of <\/span>King James <\/i><\/b>in the <\/span>Meldrum Theatre at Einar Nielsen Field House<\/b> from <\/span>March 20-April 4<\/b>. The acclaimed comedy, written by <\/span>Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph<\/b>, is described as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

LeBron James isn\u2019t just a basketball superstar\u2014he was Cleveland\u2019s hero. As one of the greatest players in NBA history, his impact on the city was undeniable throughout his years on the court there. In King James, Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo) crafts a funny and deeply poignant story about two friends whose lives are forever shaped by their shared devotion to their idol. Exploring the power of sports, loyalty, and human connection, King James brings the spirit of athleticism back to the Einar Nielsen Field House.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something especially meaningful about producing <\/span>King James<\/span><\/i> at the Meldrum Theatre, inside the space that once served as the University of Utah\u2019s field house,\u201d said <\/span>Artistic Director Karen Azenberg<\/b>. \u201cIt\u2019s the perfect setting for a play that centers on basketball\u2014but even more so on friendship. This is a smart, funny, and deeply relatable story about things that bring people together\u2014in this case, LeBron James. We\u2019re proud to have assembled a stellar cast and creative team of accomplished professionals to bring this production to life for our audiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

CAST & CREATIVE<\/b>
<\/span>Comprising the cast are two actors making their respective PTC debuts. <\/span>Eli Mayer*<\/b> portrays Matt, a privileged, restless young man who bonds with his new friend Shawn over basketball while navigating his own search for purpose and connection. Mayer’s credits include <\/span>Amid Falling Walls<\/span><\/i> (Off-Broadway’s National Yiddish Theatre), <\/span>Fiddler on the Roof<\/span><\/i> (Atlanta Opera\/Alliance Theatre), and <\/span>Ride the Cyclone<\/span><\/i> (Arena Stage & McCarter Theatre).<\/span><\/p>

Khiry Walker* <\/b>plays Shawn, a passionate and devoted Cleveland Cavaliers fan whose tough exterior gives way to a big heart and an unwavering loyalty to his team and the people he cares about. Walker’s recent credits include <\/span>Godspeed (DCPA); Sally and Tom <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Much Ado About Nothing (<\/span><\/i>The Public<\/span>); Blues for an Alabama Sky <\/span><\/i>(Keen)<\/span>, <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> Three Musketeers <\/span><\/i>(CTH).<\/span><\/p>

The production will feature direction by <\/span>Miriam Laube<\/b>, in her PTC debut. A first-generation American actor, director, and producer, she was born and raised in Pittsburgh. Her recent directing credits include <\/span>Much Ado About Nothing<\/span><\/i> at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, <\/span>Queen<\/span><\/i> at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, and <\/span>The Tempest<\/span><\/i> at Santa Cruz Shakespeare. Miriam serves as a Text and Acting Coach in the Vocal Arts Department at The Juilliard School.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Laube is joined on the Creative Team by Scenic Designer <\/span>Jo Winiarski <\/b>(PTC’s <\/span>Jersey Boys, Souvenir<\/span><\/i>); Costume Designer <\/span>K.L. Alberts<\/b> (now in his 38th season at PTC, with <\/span>Souvenir<\/span><\/i> being his most recently designed production); Lighting Designer <\/span>Marcella Barbeau <\/b>(<\/span>Into the Woods<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The Merry Wives of Windsor<\/span><\/i> at Oregon Shakespeare Festival); and Sound Designer <\/span>Paul James Prendergast <\/b>(Broadway’s <\/span>All the Way<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The Great Society<\/span><\/i>)<\/span>. <\/b>Casting is by <\/span>Geoff Josselson, CSA<\/b>. <\/span>Emily Roth* <\/b>is Production Stage Manager. <\/span><\/p>
