[SALT LAKE CITY, UT,<\/span> AUGUST 19, 2025] <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>Pioneer Theatre Company <\/b>(PTC), Utah\u2019s premier professional theatre in residence at the University of Utah, announces a developmental reading in advance of its upcoming world premiere of <\/span>Ten Brave Seconds<\/span><\/i> by <\/span>Will Van Dyke<\/b> and <\/span>Jeff Talbott<\/b>. The one-night only event, taking place on <\/span>Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00 PM in the Meldrum Theatre,<\/b> will offer a limited number of tickets to the general public, and will allow a first hand exploration into the creation of a brand-new musical. A conversation with the creators and PTC Artistic Director Karen Azenberg will occur onstage immediately afterward. <\/span>The reading (as well as the 2026 world premiere) will be directed by <\/span>Ellie Heyman<\/b> and music directed by <\/span>Patrick Sulken<\/b>. The new musical is described as follows:<\/span><\/p>

Mike is having a very big day. He\u2019s been holding onto a secret for awhile, and today his secret is totally coming out. It\u2019s also a big day for the country \u2013 huge decisions are being made all over, and at the center of it is one family teetering on the brink of\u2026everything. Ten Brave Seconds is a bright and vital new musical, infused with infectious pop melodies and rooted in a big-hearted examination of one day in the life of a kid, a family, and a community stepping bravely from the dark unknown into the daylight together.<\/span><\/i><\/p>

\u201cFostering new works for the American theatre is an integral part of PTC\u2019s mission. This has been showcased through past (and hopefully future) iterations of Play-by-Play (our staged reading series), and of course, through PTC\u2019s growing list of world premiere works\u2014including Jeff Talbott\u2019s incredibly timely <\/span>The Messenger<\/span><\/i>,\u201d said <\/span>PTC Artistic Director Karen Azenberg<\/b>. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to be able to offer PTC audiences the unique experience of seeing a musical in process and on its way to being a fully realized work. And anyone familiar with Will and Jeff\u2019s work at PTC or one of countless stages around the country knows that our audiences are in for something truly special.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

CAST & CREATIVE<\/b><\/p>

Leading the cast is <\/span>Carson Stewart*<\/b> (Broadway\u2019s <\/span>The Notebook<\/span><\/i>) as Mike. He is joined by Tony nominee <\/span>John Cariani*<\/b> (Broadway\u2019s <\/span>Something Rotten!<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Fiddler on the Roof<\/span><\/i>) as Mr. G; PTC alum <\/span>Ben Crawford*<\/b> (PTC\u2019s <\/span>Next to Normal <\/span><\/i>and Broadway\u2019s The <\/span>Phantom of the Opera<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/span><\/i>) as Carl; <\/span>Jake Pedersen*<\/b> (Broadway\u2019s<\/span> Parade, Wicked<\/span><\/i>) as Tim; and <\/span>Khadija Sankoh*<\/b> (Off-Broadway\u2019s <\/span>Little Shop of Horrors<\/span><\/i>) as Gabby. PTC alum <\/span>Maggie Scott<\/b> (<\/span>Les Mis\u00e9rables, Elf – The Musical<\/span><\/i>) will play Becky.<\/span><\/p>

The ensemble features PTC alumni <\/span>Makenna Ashby<\/b> and<\/span> Jordan Briggs<\/b> (<\/span>Beautiful: The Carole King Musica<\/span><\/i>l) and <\/span>Ariana Bagley<\/b> (<\/span>Annie<\/span><\/i>). They are joined by newcomers <\/span>Kaden Conrad<\/b>, <\/span>Adam Moore<\/b>, <\/span>Sydney Rudel<\/b>, <\/span>Harrison Timm<\/b>, and<\/span> Ella Mei Williamson<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Final casting for PTC\u2019s world premiere of <\/span>Ten Brave Seconds<\/span><\/i> will be announced at a later date.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cWe\u2019ve been working on <\/span>Ten Brave Seconds<\/span><\/i> in a quiet little bubble, but now we get to let the PTC audience in! This musical is such a labor of love for us, and we are very excited to start our journey to PTC\u2019s stage with this reading, because now we all get to learn about the piece together,\u201d said the show\u2019s creators <\/span>Will Van Dyke<\/b> and <\/span>Jeff Talbott<\/b> in a joint statement. \u201dThis kind of support is so rare, and we couldn\u2019t be more grateful to Karen for her trust in this musical or more ready to get to work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Both of the show\u2019s creators are alumni of PTC\u2014Van Dyke was the composer of incidental scores for <\/span>The Lehman Trilogy,<\/span><\/i> Ass, i<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>The Messenger<\/span><\/i>. Talbott has been featured both onstage (<\/span>The Lehman Trilogy, Oslo, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Doubt<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>The Odd Couple<\/span><\/i>) and as playwright of the PTC world premieres of <\/span>i<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The Messenger<\/span><\/i>. Together, they have written the musicals<\/span> fuzzy<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Imagine Harry<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Wintersong<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Seven Broken Hearts<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>The Circle and the Wheel<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>

The reading will be directed by <\/span>Ellie Heyman<\/b>, who helmed the recent world premiere of Van Dyke and Talbott\u2019s <\/span>fuzzy<\/span><\/i> at Barrington Stage.
